Mortgage insiders seek more "graceful" alternative to foreclosure

Federal officials and mortgage-industry executives are trying to find ways for struggling homeowners to leave their homes without undergoing foreclosure proceedings or evictions. For example, Citigroup is working on a pilot program that would allow certain borrowers to stay in their home for as long as six months without making payments in exchange for keeping the home in good shape. "This is a graceful way to move on with their lives instead of being foreclosed on and being evicted from their homes," said Sanjiv Das, CEO of CitiMortgage.
