S.F. mandates energy efficiency for existing commercial buildings

Commercial property owners in San Francisco will need to submit a report of their building's annual energy consumption and conduct building energy audits every five years, according to a new ordinance. The city will provide building owners an online tool from the Environmental Protection Agency to help gauge their facility's energy usage. The policy could encourage green-building retrofits, even though it doesn't set specific standards for energy efficiency, city officials said.
