Computer program provides risk assessments for parole

A computer model aims to help calculate the risk that an individual will commit a crime based on information such as their successful completion of parole and their potential for violence. The Philadelphia Department of Probation and Parole uses the forecasts, and work that is under way could assist judges with sentencing decisions, said Richard Berk of the University of Pennsylvania, who wrote the program's code.
