Consensus reached on 12 warning signs after bowel surgery

A report in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons finds that poor discharge directions for colon surgery patients can lead to readmissions. Investigators assembled experts to assess postsurgical events that should should raise concern and narrowed the list to 12 that most of the experts could agree on. More than 16% of Medicare patients who have colon surgery end up back in the hospital within 30 days. Two reasons cited to seek emergency care were chest pain and an inability to breathe or shortness of breath.
