Bertha seal fix is a "complicated process," will take months to complete

Fixing or replacing the damaged seals on tunnel-boring machine Bertha, which has been stalled under Seattle since Dec. 6, is a "complicated process" and will take months to finish, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. Seattle Tunnel Partners and the machine's manufacturer are working to find the best way to access the seals, according to WSDOT. "STP has not yet fully determined the cause of the seal problems ... We have requested and expect detailed plans on how the repairs will be made and how STP can recover lost time on the tunneling project," the WSDOT added.
