Data show uptick in family medicine residency, but shortage persists

Data from the 2013 National Resident Matching Program showed a greater number of residency positions in family medicine were offered compared with past years, with a fill rate of 96%. However, the American Medical Association noted a persistent shortage of primary care providers, which experts argue should make up 40% of the total physician workforce to handle the aging population and the increasing number of patients with chronic disease.
