IRS suggests final guidelines on calculating adjunct faculty hours

Final guidelines released Monday by the Internal Revenue Service are aimed at outlining a "reasonable method" for colleges and universities to calculate adjunct hours in light of the Affordable Care Act. The rules suggest colleges add an additional hour and 15 minutes for every hour part-time instructors teach. An hour each week should also be added for meetings or office hours adjuncts work outside of class, the guidelines state. Under the Affordable Care Act, employers are required to provide health benefits for employees working 30 hours or more per week.
