A maritime commute for students from Chesapeake Bay island

The 13 middle and high-school students from Smith Island spend their early-morning ferry commute to their mainland school by doing homework or snoozing. When ice prevents them from making the hour-long trip, as it has already done 12 times this year, their teachers fax them homework and ask the principal of their elementary school to administer their tests.
