Functional foods, such as fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, whole grains and cruciferous vegetables, can have positive health benefits, including lowering cholesterol, reducing the risk of a heart attack and cancer and controlling weight gain. "Functional foods have evolved as food and nutrition science has advanced beyond the treatment of deficiencies to reducing the risk of disease," an American Dietetic Association official said.
