New York cracks down on unreported wages, unpaid taxes

New York's crackdown on unreported and underpaid wages probably will have a deterrent effect, a state spokesman said. State investigators discovered $19 million in unreported wages, $3 million in underpaid wages, and nearly $1 million in unpaid unemployment insurance fund taxes. The sweeps concentrated on jobs in the construction and restaurant industries, especially looking for workers who were improperly classified as independent contractors or those who were paid off-the-books.
