Stimulus compromise includes education, but no new-construction funds

President Barack Obama, congressional leaders and key Republican moderates reached an agreement Wednesday on a $789 billion economic stimulus bill that will go back to both the House and Senate for approval before being sent to Obama. A key Republican moderate refused to accept school-modernization funds in the final version of the bill, but lawmakers agreed that a portion of funding earmarked for state aid could be directed toward renovating school facilities, although not for new construction.
