Consumer education is needed on generic effectiveness, costs

Recent research indicates that many Americans aren't aware or don't believe that generic drugs are as effective as brand-name drugs, and they may not understand that brand-name drugs can cost 50% to 70% more than generics, UnitedHealthcare Wisconsin's Dr. Bruce Weiss writes. With a number of brand-name drugs about to lose their patents, Dr. Weiss stresses that physicians and pharmacists need to help educate consumers about the effectiveness of generics.
