DOMA adds tax hit for married same-sex couples

Married same-sex couples who take advantage of spousal benefits such as health insurance coverage can be be taxed on the value of those benefits by the federal government. The Defense of Marriage Act bars same-sex married couples from the federal tax advantages offered to heterosexual couples, such as exemptions from estate taxes.
