Study: Energy efficiency of white, green roofs depend on location

The energy-efficiency benefits from white or green roofs depend on geography, according to a study, which used climate models to determine the roofs' advantages in six "megapolitan" regions across the country. The study found that white and green roofs can reduce urban heat, but cool roofs offer more of an advantage in southern climates than in northern ones because of higher heating costs in winter. Meanwhile, green roofs benefit northern climates more than southern ones because their water vapor adds warmth, USA Today reports.
