Senate passes record highway, mass transit legislation

A $318 billion, six-year highway and mass transit bill was approved in the Senate yesterday with a wide enough vote margin to override any potential presidential veto. "It is an essential element in moving our economy forward," Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., said about the bill, which he also called "one of the most important" on this year's Congressional agenda. The White House and some Republican Senators oppose the bill as being too expensive.
