Proposed plastic-bag ban advances in Colorado

A measure that would ban plastic bags at large stores in Colorado has won the approval of a state Senate committee. The ban, which would take effect in 2012, has the support of students and others, but retailers -- including big-box stores and department stores -- have opposed the ban, and Republicans who voted against the proposal say they fear it could increase the use of paper bags, which require more energy and water to make than plastic bags do.
