San Francisco mayor calls for mandatory earthquake retrofits

A plan supported by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom would require some soft-story building owners in the city to pay for mandatory earthquake retrofits. A city report calls for retrofits of 2,800 large, wood-frame buildings that are vulnerable to collapse or serious damage during an earthquake. The retrofits could cost building owners between $9,000 to $28,000 per residential unit.
