Chu: $8.3B loan guarantee for Ga. nuclear project nears clearance

An $8.3 billion loan guarantee for the construction of Southern Co.'s two new reactors at Plant Vogtle in Georgia is close to final approval, said Energy Secretary Steven Chu. "We expect that one to close and go forward," Chu said, but the project needs to achieve several "other milestones" before securing the Department of Energy's final clearance. His statement came less than a week after the Nuclear Regulatory Commission granted the project a construction license.
