Survival index may help guide home parenteral nutrition decisions

A survival index based on simple predictive factors may help physicians determine whether cachectic cancer patients should receive home parenteral nutrition, researchers in Italy reported in the Annals of Oncology. Palliative expert Vickie Baracos of the University of Alberta said the study was very useful because while the guidelines for HPN are clear they are hard to implement because of a lack of predictors of survival.
