Scientists discover way to strengthen natural anti-virus defenses

Scientists found that the removal of two genes in mice that repress interferon, a protein that serves as the cell's first line of defense against viruses, boosts the production of the protein and prevents viruses from reproducing. The finding could lead to the development of new antiviral drugs that would target the genes in humans, the scientists said.
