Former chief of Schering-Plough expects more drug-sector mergers

Mergers and similar deals will be necessary among small, cash-strapped drugmakers as well as major companies looking to fund research efforts, said Fred Hassan, former chief executive of Schering-Plough. "One reason deals are necessary is because the innovation investments are becoming larger and larger and it makes it easier when people can combine their resources to make the big, deep bets that you need to make for difficult diseases," Hassan said.
