Hawaii reconsiders legalizing gambling

Hawaii lawmakers did not legalize gambling in the islands 10 years ago, but the state's $1.2 billion budget deficit has some lawmakers reconsidering their stance. State Rep. Jon Riki Karamatsu has proposed a bill that would allow one casino on Oahu and impose a 7% tax on monthly gross receipts. A second gambling bill would allow native Hawaiians to build casinos on Hawaiian home lands, similar to tribal casinos in the continental U.S.
