A Newport News, Va., teacher has successfully written grants to provide her students who have special needs with a listening station, whisper phones that help students with language impairments improve their speech and other equipment to help her students learn. Marilyn Clark said her most recent grant paid for $339 worth of musical instruments and the listening station, which came with read-along books and other equipment. "The books that are set to music encourage the students to read," Clark said. "When they hear the song, they recognize it, and it helps bring them out of their shell."
