Hellebores can provide color to a dormant garden because it produces vibrant flowers before spring kicks in, master gardener Jan Beglinger writes. Hellebores are low maintenance and not attractive to deer, but they should be planted in soils that are slightly acidic and be mulched each fall, Beglinger notes.
