Common-sense steps prevent disease transmission from pets

Although one recent study reported two people contracted serious illnesses from close contact with their pets, past AVMA President Dr. Larry Kornegay points out that these cases are from decades ago and such instances are rare. Dr. Kornegay notes that people with HIV, diabetes or recent surgery should take extra precautions, but for other people, common-sense steps such as regular veterinary care and bathing for pets and hand-washing for humans will keep everyone healthy.
