ISAAA reports gain in biotech crops; critics question calculations

Critics of genetically modified crops are casting doubt on an industry-funded report that says farmers in developing nations will sow more biotech crops this year than farmers in industrialized countries. The International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications is accused of inflating its figures by multiplying the farmed surface area by the number of genetic traits engineered in crops. The group said biotech crops planted rose 8% last year after rising 10% in 2010.
