Rakuten in Japan will purchase Viber for $900 million

Online Japanese retailer Rakuten said it will pay $900 million for Viber Internet, a calling and messaging service with 300 million users. The move is intended to establish social networking as a selling strategy so Rakuten can better compete with Naver's Line and Tencent's WeChat. "Viber understands how people actually want to engage and have built the only service that truly delivers on all fronts," Rakuten CEO Hiroshi Mikitani said in a statement.
