TVA to replace steam generators at Watts Bar nuclear plant

The Tennessee Valley Authority will pay Westinghouse Electric $160 million for the construction of four replacement steam generators that it will install in the Watts Bar 2 reactor in Tennessee even before the new reactor is finished. The current steam generators have faults and will be replaced within the first decade of the reactor's operation because it is not necessary to replace the devices during the reactor's construction, TVA said. TVA is expected to save $47 million if it purchases the steam generators now, said Chip Pardee, the utility's chief operating officer.
