Discount carriers may benefit from consolidation, CEO says

Airline consolidation won't hurt consumers or discount carriers if regulators properly scrutinize proposed combinations, AirTran Airways CEO Bob Fornaro said. He noted that AirTran supports consolidation because it could force Delta Air Lines to shed some of its assets at airports such as Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International. Observers also note that a Delta-Northwest deal would likely trigger other mergers.
