IFA: Business activity tax unfair

The House Small Business Committee on Thursday conducted a hearing on a bill intended to clarify business activity taxes imposed by some states on out-of-state businesses. The International Franchise Association maintains business activity taxes are unfair to franchisers who operate only in some states. The taxes have become a "creative" way for states to generate revenue, said David French, IFA's vice president of government relations. Firehouse Subs Chief Financial Officer Stephen Joost appeared before the committee yesterday.
