2 Minnesota companies work on drug-coated balloons

Lutonix and Possis Medical are separately working to develop drug-coated balloons that could serve as a lower-cost alternative to drug-eluting stents used in treating vascular diseases. Lutonix plans to begin clinical trials in Europe for its device this year and hopes to secure FDA approval by 2014. A spokesman for Possis Medical said the company plans to begin a clinical study of its product in the U.S. in the "near future."
