With the release of new privacy and security regulations in addition to the existing HIPAA rules, such as the Federal Trade Commission's Red Flags rule and the revised HITECH Act, breach prevention has become mission-critical for hospitals. To safeguard all patient records, hospitals should implement a three-prong process that outlines response plans before, during and after a data breach incident, one expert says. Implementing technical safeguards, activating response teams and ensuring organizationwide uniformity of policies are other ways to address data protection challenges, according to some experts.
