Imports and less-processed foods pose food safety challenges

Recalls and illnesses related to tainted foods are becoming more frequent, partly because of better detection methods but also because more foods are imported and consumers want foods that are less processed, such as raw milk. A food safety bill awaiting a Senate vote would give the Food and Drug Administration more power to prevent food contamination.
