Survey: Germany's Weber is front-runner to succeed ECB's Trichet

A survey of economists found that Axel Weber, president of Germany's Bundesbank, likely will succeed Jean-Claude Trichet as European Central Bank president. Vitor Constancio of Portugal is expected to become vice president, succeeding Lucas Papademos. "Weber has a very strong personality and will definitely give the euro a very powerful and visible face," said Laurent Bilke, an economist at Nomura International. "He's a recognised economist and will make a difference. Under him, the ECB may even grow in its international stature."
