Mechanical problems marked beginning of ultimately ruined cruise

A series of mechanical failures possibly as a result of poor maintenance are cited for the interrupted Carnival Triumph cruise in the Gulf of Mexico. A fire in the engine room was the proximate cause after the ship's departure from Galveston, Texas, was initially delayed due to a propulsion problem attributed to faulty alternators.
