The economic downturn has hit the Washington, D.C., real estate market, long seen as recession-proof because of the massive government office space needs. Demand for office space steadily declined in the region last year. "2008 is obviously a year to forget," said Sigrid Zialcita, a research director for Cushman & Wakefield.
