NTSB: Flight 3407 on autopilot when it crashed near Buffalo

An investigator said the commuter plane that crashed in New York state late last week was on autopilot until it was returned to manual control by automatic safety devices just before it fell. The pilot may have violated the carrier's policy for flying in icy conditions by having the plane on autopilot. "You may be able in a manual mode to sense something sooner than the autopilot can sense it," said Steve Chealander of the National Transportation Safety Board.
