Promising solar shingles could significantly cut energy costs

Dow Chemical and its partners hope to sell thermoplastic solar roof shingles by 2011. Dow Solar Solutions developed the shingles over the past year, using photovoltaic technology that integrates solar cells with shingles. Robert J. Cleereman, senior director of solar development, noted that solar shingles could lead to large cuts in energy costs for consumers as well as government subsidies or free installation as the technology develops.
