Companies tout 50-cent-per-gallon enzyme cost for cellulosic ethanol

Enzyme prices are declining to such an extent that by next year they will account for only 25% of cellulosic ethanol production costs, said Poul Ruben Andersen, an executive at Novozymes. The Denmark-based company and rival Danisco each unveiled a new line of products that are expected to help cut enzyme costs to about 50 cents a gallon by 2011. Over the next several years, Danisco hopes to halve the enzyme costs again to 20 or 30 cents a gallon, executive Philippe Lavielle said.
