U.S. bond market starts 2014 slowly

Industry data indicate that the bond market got off to a slow start last month, with trading down 16% and issuance off 24% compared with January 2013. Among hard-hit areas were mortgage bonds backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which saw average daily trading volume drop 42%. The first quarter traditionally is a brisk period for bond trading.
