Florida to launch new alternative certification program

Florida is planning to create "educator preparation institutes" at its universities and community colleges to ease a projected shortfall of 30,000 teachers in 2006 and 20,000 a year during the decade that follows. Already, 23 out of 28 community colleges have signed up to start offering the yearlong "boot camp" program for persons with bachelor's degrees.
