The recession has made many chief executives realize that they need an IT boss who will contribute to corporate strategy sessions, not remain shut away in the server room. Four years ago, Intel CIO John Johnson was stumped when his boss asked how he would support Intel's growth strategy, so he took a step back and began looking at the big picture. "Today you have to be much more aware of the business goals, and understand the contribution IT needs to offer to make them happen," he says.
