Federal agencies could rent UAVs in fee-for-service model

Some federal agencies and researchers may be able to rent unmanned aerial vehicles from the manufacturer one day instead of purchasing them. Steven Reid, AAI Corp.'s vice president for unmanned aircraft systems, said "we recognize that for most federal agencies it's a huge investment to do the acquisition, as well as the maintenance." AAI is looking at a fee-for-service business model, but it may depend on relaxing airspace restrictions by the Federal Aviation Administration.
