Massive tunnel borers at work to build U.K.'s Crossrail tunnels

The first of eight enormous boring machines, each about 164 feet long and weighing almost 1,102 tons, is carving subway tunnels beneath London. It's part of the $23 billion Crossrail project that is adding 26 miles of track and new twin-bore tunnels. Tunneling is expected to be finished in 2014 and service to start in late 2018 or early 2019.
