Pentagon will back manufacturing "centers of excellence"

In an effort to foster greater innovation in military technology and manufacturing, the Pentagon will help create two institutes that combine university research with commercial manufacturing expertise -- in effect, creating "centers of excellence" to get better products to the military, says Brett Lambert, deputy assistant secretary of defense for manufacturing and industrial base policy. The centers will get a mix of private and government funding and are to become self-sustaining, providing goods for the Defense Department to use.
