RTD teas gain traction as consumers seek functional options

Sales of ready-to-drink teas are expected to grow to nearly $8 billion by 2014, according to statistics from Packaged Facts. The many health benefits of tea-drinking are widely promoted, giving rise to steady growth in the iced tea sector and projections of continued growth over the next five years. "Consumers want more from their beverages than just hydration or calories. They want great, satisfying, functional beverages that offer more than just refreshment. Tea is perceived in the industry as a healthy alternative," said John Harper Crandall, vice president of sales for Amelia Bay, a company that develops tea and coffee extracts.
