Alaska 5th-graders learn leadership skills as safety officers

An Alaska elementary school is teaching leadership skills to some fifth-graders by training them as safety officers. Wearing orange vests and equipped with flashlights and two-way radios, students are stationed outside the school to help guide younger students off the bus and remind others to walk, listen and do their best. "It's a program to teach responsibility, sportsmanship and leadership, and it's a program they can grow from," said Adrienne Nappier, a special-education paraprofessional and program leader.
