How to negotiate the challenges of government reporting for nonprofits

Nonprofits that receive federal funds must adhere to strict government reporting requirements. This article reviews some of the issues, including applying cost accounting standards, cost charging, subrecipient cost monitoring, timekeeping and budget restrictions. The release in December of new guidance -- the Uniform Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards -- should add clarity and ease the compliance burden for nonprofits.
