Tighter brand standards are crucial to data security, experts say

Hotel brands may have to get more deeply involved in their franchisees' data-security practices to bolster properties' defenses against cyber crimes, several experts said. "Based on recent history, it's clear the corporate brand should be ultimately concerned if not contractually responsible for setting the franchisees' standard of security and having an audit program in place," said Anthony Roman, founder and CEO of Roman & Associates, an investigative and security consulting firm. Hotel brands can mandate the use of effective but inexpensive equipment to ensure data security, the experts said.
