New Seattle buildings raise the roof on green building design

Seattle's new City Hall and Justice Center each feature rooftop gardens that are as important for their function as their form. In addition to dramatically reducing storm water runoff, the roofs provide insulation that lowers cooling costs for the buildings and they extend the life of the roofs' waterproof membranes by protecting from ultraviolet degradation, temperature extremes and mechanical damage.
